Day-O Villa

Jamaican Snacks

1.  Banana chips & Ovaltine biscuits:

Banana chips are like potato chips.  They are not sweet!  They are made from green bananas.  Excellent.

In Jamaica, ask for a biscuit, not a cookie.  If you're lucky, it'll be an Ovaltine biscuit - the best.

2.  Fruit:

As you would expect, Jamaica is famous for wonderful fresh fruit.  Many of the fruit will be familiar to you, but some will be new & exotic.

The Jamaican pineapples are incredibly sweet - especially the "sugar loaf" variety.

Star apples are intersting.  They are supposed to look like a Star when you cut them in cross-section - you be the judge.  Quite sweet, with an interesting texture.

Bananas -excellent, but don't be fooled by the often speckled appearance.  These are grown for flavor, not appearance!

Oranges & tangerines abound, and fresh orange juice is squeezed daily at Day-O

Depending on the season, you may be able to sample many varieties of mango, naesberry, Otahiti apples, sweet sop & guineps .

Papaya:  First, you must learn to call it "paw-paw".  These grow wild all over the countryside, & like all Jamaican fruit, excellent. Here's what it looks like on a tree by the side of the road:
